Inclusion

If you're an experienced cyclist, be mindful of inexperienced riders out on the roads. Try to assist your fellow cyclists if necessary; other riders will appreciate any time given to assist them with minor bike repairs. Use your prior experience and knowledge responsibly to involve others within the Pittsburgh cycling community. Keep in mind others' backgrounds and make an effort to include cyclists from more marginalized backgrounds when repairing your own or their own bicycles. Some examples of what this looks like with regards to gender and sexuality can be found on BikePGH's website, which has a useful infographic on the subject.

Below are some resources to learn more about local cycling groups in Pittburgh. These groups all have a focus around inclusion that you can support or get involved with yourself:

  • Black Girls Do Bike: Community of women of color sharing a passion for cycling
  • Women At Work Cycling Club: Organization for women who are serious about learning how to successfully ride a bike
  • WMNBikePGH: Group focused on making biking accessible for women and non-binary people

In summary, listen to others and respect them and their experiences. Create a welcoming sense of community for everyone around you and for those involved in cycling. Keep an open mind while interacting with other cyclists and help establish a sense of belonging for them, both for repairing bicycles and biking in general.
